Wet, Windy and Cold

28th of May here at the Bluff and it is just what it says in the title. There was two super days,, sunny, warm and lots got done here. Those are the times lots gets done here..Our neighbour here at the Bluff is going to town on the gardens as she has for the past yrs. It will soon look like a place call Butchard Gardens. She is great and has a super green thumb as for me well it will die faster than one can get it in the gound.

My first seeing of wolf scat. Not to far from the house so now I am even a wee but more nervous and keep a real close eye on one of the dogs. She loves to wander off , picks up a scent and off she goes nose to the ground.

Did I say that we had a chopper and ship.. Christmas arrived early. Well not really but we do get alot of stuff we have ordered when they come. Even the dogs made out like killer bandits.

Not much longer and I will be off on a long vacation. That makes life busy here getting the grocery orders done for the next two months ahead for the hubby and making sure there is food and snacks for the dogs, just to name a few things we all have to do before heading out. And when I pack I have the suitcases in the spare bedroom and start filling and packing about a month ahead that way I do not forget stuff like the cell phone, wallet, camera, clothing that will be necessary for a 2 month holiday. I know you can buy but still and there are appointments for hair, doctors, eyes, and more that have to be booked as well. Not like living in town where you can just call and get one for that day or next wk.

I hope that the weather will finally become summer here soon those two lovely days where a teaser. More from the Bluff later feel free to ask questions if I have not answered something about living on lighthouse you might like answered

What a week !!

Well our week has been one of sun, overcast, and of course go old showers. But along with all this we have had the girls (the sealions) back out front. Nice to watch them swim up the channel and then drift down with the flow of the tide. As well a small pod of Orca three for sure a male, female and a wee one heading down south. Still waiting for the super pod to come through with our luck it will be in the late night.

Along with all that wildlife there has been a wolf seen right on our helicopter pad. This is the area where we take two of the dogs and throw stick up the hillside for them to chase. Our only neighbour took a photo the wolf looks sick or maybe very old and thin so he /she will be looking for a bit to eat. If we have our way it will not be one of the 4 dogs on station. There has been a wolf before but that was in the winter and left this is first in the spring when food is plenty. This is why we are thinking it is older or sick or both.

I am getting ready for my trip off station I leave here in about 20 days now. It will be a long one but a good one. The summer is the best time here at the Bluff but I have school reunions to attend and old friends to meet up with . Some have been over 40 yrs so it will be a fun time in the old town.

If lucky we might even see mail and goodies before grocery day. There is a chopper coming to pick up some here and take the to relief at another station for a bit . So if all so to plan we should get a mail and packages. Well off to the land of counting sheep.. hope you all have a good wk check later and see what is going on here at the Bluff..

Back at the Bluff

Well we are home after our 21 days at Dryad. They went rather fast and enjoyable as well.

The flight home was interesting in that we where not sure that we would make it home when planned but in the end last minute we did. That is normal for life on the lights to not really know if you are going out when planned so you just get ready and wait and wait and wait. Then at some point you learn your fate.

Our homecoming was really great! Two dead mice that had been in their traps for three wks. Lets just say the smell was less than pleasant. Really had one just about throwing up. So after that clean up we have been busy with the house. And with the good weather the outside the gardens are popping up. The lady here with us is a real gardener and the place just shows off colour all summer long. We have been putting in pernnials so every yr they are getting bigger and alot more colour (Canadian spelling). Right at the moment I have a hummingbird sitting on a wire just outside my window. These are the things we love to see our there. As well there has been a great pod of sea lions hanging around making a lot of racket.

The sky is blue and the water calm. So once the mice smell is gone from the house it is beautiful to have the evening outside with no bugs yet!!!!! But we know they will show up soon and the beauty will be gone.

I am slowly getting ready to head out on a wee vacation. Well not sure how wee two months is but non the less it is one of my three trips a yr. Here is hoping our good weather will stay for a few more days and that yours where ever you are reading this from is good too. Will up date later from The Bluff

Day Two Hurray!!!!!!

Well day two of sun. A bit cool but sun. And it sounds like we might even get a few more days of it. I know that seems odd but after so many days of rain and overcast the sun is nice to see.

Looks like we are getting visitors today. Aways nice to have anyone come. Might even have them around for a lunch. As we never get to entertain out here so any excuse is great.

The flowers are blooming and more coming through the ground. We had a large pod of Orca pass just off shore here. Would have been great if they had come in a bit closer. But this is the start of them coming and hopefully we will get to see the super pod . That is many of the Orca families coming South and then divide up as go down.

Yesterday as well I was watching one of the many crows here. It is interesting to see how they grab a clam , fly with it , drop from a height and then come in and pick out the meat. It is interesting to watch and wonder how they learned to do that. The clam population here must be really good as we have alot of crows here.

Well I learned yesterday that my new carpet did not make it to the main warehouse for shipment to me until a few days ago. And no word also learned that some garden things I ordered as well had not been sent yet to the secondary warehouse. Seems that they only had a couple of what I wanted on hand and will order in the rest. Had called and ordered well in advance of the grocery run so that they would have a chance to order in. And again no call. Very upsetting in that if you are trying to get something done and not knowing in advance does not leave you time to order elsewhere. So upsetting, not like the composting toliets and the flies they bring but still .

Guess I should get on with my day. Hope anyone who reads this will have a good one as well all from Dryad today.

Better Weather

Well here at Dryad the weather is bit better. Of course we are about a 25 minute chopper ride from the Bluff. So things are really coming to life here. Even their dog he is a sweetie. But the other day you would never know that he had a hip surgery. Like our dogs he goes out every weather ahead of me. Usually very slowly but this one morning it was like having him shot out of a gun. And no way would he come!!! My husband noticed that we had two white tail deer on station and he was running down the beach after them and you would have never known he had anything wrong with the hip. He finally headed back and to say the least we where not happy with him. Yet interestingly he was walking like his hip was bad yea right.

I must say that the vessels we see here are lot more than at the Bluff as well. This morning we had one go by that I am expecting a call on at some point that it sunk or in trouble. It was well loaded he might make it but in a heavy sea look out. As part of our job we do notice stuff like that and I kept a note on it's name and time it went by here.

I guess I never say what a mess it was getting here we went from coming by chopper with food to ferry, to float plane with no food. A few days ahead,, not a few days ahead it was a real dogs breakfast. But in the end we made it as planned. Weather of course plays a big part of our life on the lights and getting places. And as usual there is no plans made for what if,, or to even let us know what is happening. Most of what we hear is from someone calling in on the open line which all the lights can hear. Or someone gets and email and the msn messangers are ringing I bet every where letting each other know what we have heard. Since most of us up here have Sat internet it has made life so easy now and allows us connections with the outside world and able to order stuff and more. Even what is happening with other lights and even in the main office as well.

Well it is time for a weather and then maybe a wee walk and finish laundry. Yes we have to do all the things we would do in town.. and no housecleaners out here to hire..so one must do it your self.. One thing I just might get when we are back in town a housecleaner.. hummmmmm
