The Wait

Well today is the day I head off on vacation. So the wait begins as normal on the lights. You book your time off well in advance and then pray that there has been no changes to the chopper schedule or the weather will get bad. One must remember that the weather has to be clear or atleast flyable all the way to either Port Hardy or Prince Rupert. And the last few days it has been either fog somewhere or very low cloud levels. So it is 5 AM and I am up and have morning coffee to an overcast day so far.

If I get lucky the chopper will be out of the hanger at 10Am , hour and half to here then off to Bella Bella for fuel and then a hour if lucky to Hardy. So if all goes as planned I would starting off from there at 2 in the afternoon. So I will not make it all the way to Vancouver as it is a from there on a good drive day 7 hours to Namino and then the ferry. The last one is at 9 PM so that means I would get in to Vancouver rather late oh well. So looking like a overnighter some where and then finish the trip the next day. This is one of the not so nice things about here getting on and off. We all know that weather and a broken chopper will set us back but on a good day we are still doing the old hurry up and wait. I will be gone for a month or so .. Here is hoping I will be near a computer to leave a note.. Well off to see about morning weather further down the coast and more Coffee!!!! Have a good day ,, wk , month chat with you all Later from the Bluff

Another new animal for me

Well this has been the wk of animals.. Yesterday my husband was thinking he had to clean our pond out back. So brought up the wet dry vac. And started sucking water out of it. After looking up in to the moss I noticed a salamander!!!! my first. It was so neat and good for us as there are so many bugs here. Then I noticed one in the pond!!!! oh my gosh I wonder how much damage we where doing to it. As the water was pouring out of the vacum we noticed two very dead looking salamanders.. Talk about upset with oneself. All of sudden one started to move it's leg Hurray.. Hubby quickly up it in the pond and it took off for a place to hid. Other one he put on the moss along side and it finally moved as well .. after that we left the dirt that was left in the pond and started filling it again.

This is a lesson well learned by us to check all around the pond before cleaning it out and we will no longer have to worry about other bug larva as they will eat them.. So nice to have them here along with the dragon flies and butterflies that are coming back to the station. Our neighbour has done alot of hard work on the gardens and it is paying off big time.

Our eagle was back this morning looking for his early morning breakfast nice to see him through the fog. It will be another warm day after it all burns off again today these are the great days out here the time we all love the lights. Have a good day and will let you know of any more new things I see.. oh nice the waxwinged cardnials are back they look like they have lone ranger mask on so neat. Lovely to see them back again this yr.. Best to you all who read this wee ramble from a keeper's spouse at the Bluff

A sighting

Today was another lovely day. Sun , warm and wind. Even better the chopper arrived with the months groceries and mail. Nice to have the freezer full again and things we have been craving back in the house. All the fresh food will go fast like the fruit and veggies along with salad stuff. Then it will be three weeks of none again. There was fresh corn on the cob.. so we will have a great feed of that one night.

The highlight of the day was a large pod of Killer Whales about 12 in all going by the Bluff.. and what a show lobbing that is wacking the tail on the water.. and breaching and just plan playing. There must have been a few families as there where more than a couple of wee ones along side the parents splashing about. I thought I heard a whale blow from my computer room window. And sure enough there they all where. Lots to see from this little window of mine. And on sunny days it is the best place in the world to be. Makes me feel a tiny bit sad for those of you who can not see what I see from it. Young people to day think they need drugs to get high boy have I got news for them living out here can give you a high on days like this that will last a lifetime. One that drugs can never give you they are only for a short time and then you need more to remember where as here it is never gone from ones mind and of course you can take a photo if necessary. It is like that on the days there are high winds and huge waves rolling in.. Well off to do dishes the mundain housework never leaves you out here. And for so strange reason out here the dishes still have not learned to wash and dry themselves. Have super evening all I know it will be a great one at the Bluff.. later

From my window

Today while looking out the window in my computer room..(well really what would be the front mudroom) of our house I saw a halibut. Ok not that I know for sure but it was large flat and white. At first I wondered if it was not just some junk floating about. As at times there is alot of that. So took out the bino's and had a look seemed to be moving at first and only one cup of coffee could have been my eyes. But not it seemed to go deeper and deeper . Called hubby and by the time he got there it was gone.

Then later I headed for a wee stroll down the board walk here with the dogs and had an eagle fly feet from my head what a great place.. And today there is still sun!!!!See it is on these days that we keepers find our life out here so rewarding and a joy. Later this week we get our monthly grocery run and mail. So it will be like Christmas again. To have gotten mail twice this month is a small mircale and one we are happy to have had. Well I leave here now in 7 days so I had better get at a few things about the house and packing. Hope who ever you are who are reading this have a great day or maybe there is no none reading this but family either way have a super day. Shall keep you all posted on the happenings here at the Bluff

Sun but for how long..is the question

June the 4th and finally sun!!! For the last few days cold, wet and ski jacket weather. Lets hope this will stay for a bit. I know that we only get our water from rain and in the summer we do need it but still after all winter and spring a few days even wks of sun would be nice.

As well we are able to see the boats going by and the ones that slow down to use the free hot spot we have for them. It is so intetersting to see them slow down and then hang out while they download information or email. Who would expect to have a wireless hot spot out here in the middle of no where. Would think it is a nice surprise and it is FREE.

Had chopper come from down south but seems that they came empty.. had hoped to see our few supplies that are down in the main warehouse come up. Oh well guess it will be about a month or so longer before we get them. Just sad to see it come up empty when it could have delivered mail and other things to other lighthouses along the way.

There has been no real sign of the wolf again. Well not one that we humans see but the dogs do seem to still smell and worry about it so it could be hanging around still. As well we have learned that two of the other lighthouse have Bear problems both are not great to have. Had not heard that there was a food shortage for them but who knows.

Saw to very large Humpback Whales yesterday evening what a sight. They where massive and lovely to see them take the deep dive. Once down they are good for some 20 mins or more and by then they will have swam rather far along the passage.

Well off to take the dogs out for their one of several daily stick throws on the helicopter pad. Will keep you all posted on the sun and life here at the Bluff!!
